An Ordinary Marriage

An Ordinary Marriage: The World of a Gentry Family in Provincial Russia

Oxford University Press, 2013

Abstract:

The book is a microhistorical study of a marriage, based on an unprecedentedly rich archive of private documents left by the Chikhachev family of Vladimir Province. It examines the gendered work roles of Andrei and Natalia Chikhachev, contextualizing this marriage within the overlapping worlds of the serf-inhabited village and the network of middling provincial gentry. The book uses microhistory to examine in depth the reception and adaptation of Western European ideas like domesticity, Enlightenment, and sentimentalism in a setting where the political and social developments that gave rise to these ideas were absent.
